Responsibilities:
Administrative Duties Utilizes computer skills to document patient notes and other Service work including necessary reports. Provides accurate and timely documentation of all procedures and therapy in the appropriate medical record to include CPRS, BCMA and any other authorized 3rd party software used in clinic Maintains and submits statistics and other required reports by due date. Follows up on status of any open requests weekly and provides updates to Supervisory, Management Analyst and Pulmonary Section Chief in writing until completion via e-mail Understand and adheres to policies and procedures of Respiratory Therapy, Medical Service and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) Communicates effectively using interpersonal relationship skills when interacting with other members of the health care team or patients. Displays tact and courteous behavior when working with staff and patients Increases knowledge and skills by attending workshops, lectures and meetings in the field of Respiratory Therapy and communicates information to Respiratory Therapy staff through face to face meetings and follow up with an email Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section Participates in the training of students and other technicians so that these individuals may acquire an understanding of the principles of Respiratory Therapy and how it relates to patient's diagnosis and overall health Improves staff development by providing training in complex examination, treatment procedures and techniques Implements quality assurance, improvement programs and policies and ensures quality, efficiency and safety in performance of all patient procedures Provides input to the development and evaluation of patient care standards Clinical Duties:
Administers respiratory therapy and diagnostic studies to patients at all levels of cardiopulmonary compromise Delivers respiratory care as needed in the more complex respiratory care procedures and to poor risk patients such as those in the older age group Participates in the audit of respiratory care, recommending changes where indicated Performs clinical evaluation of patients' respiratory therapy treatments and needs and makes appropriate referral to the provider Oversees all functions performed by the Respiratory Care Unit as to the appropriateness of technique and procedure Performs educational in-services for patients, patients' families and nursing personnel regarding basic respiratory therapy equipment and procedures Calibrate Sensormedics VMax System to perform a full complement of Pulmonary Function Tests that include Spirometry, Lung Volumes, Diffusing Capacity, and Airway Resistance Administering aerosolized medication and providing humidification for patients with compromised airways Performs full Pulmonary Function testing and pulse oximetry Sets up and monitors the therapeutic use of oxygen Provide complete documentation, via electronic Prosthetic Home Oxygen Consult and CPRS orders. Maintains knowledge of Home Oxygen Contract Set up Sleep Ambulatory Monitored patient Provide instruction to patients regarding their prescribed CPAP, BPAP, AVAP units Supervision Duties:
Collaborates with Prosthetics Department/Home Oxygen program to ensure ongoing coverage for Home Oxygen assessments and appropriate follow-up exams as required and in accordance with current policies and accreditation standards. Oversees the clinical competencies of the Home Oxygen Coordinator Ensures compliance with physician orders, patient education, and all policies and procedures within the department Initiates performance improvement action plans as directed by the Section Chief, Medicine Service Chief and/or other Supervisory Authority until completion Ensures respiratory therapists complete their assignments timely and are competent on every procedure performed and have the knowledge required to set-up and operate all equipment employed to care for the patient Communicate expectations and provide monthly feedback on job performance to include improvements needed and positive performances to respiratory therapists Provides instruction to respiratory therapist on the proper selection and fitting of masks to adequately deliver positive airway pressure (PAP) to patients Oversees the daily operation of the clinic to include ensuring that clinic cancellations are submitted at a minimum 50 days in advance and that rescheduling plans include all attempts to reschedule patients into earlier appointment slots Work Schedule:

In addition to meeting the requirements for GS-8, candidates must have had at least 1 additional year of successful and progressively responsible experience related to respiratorytherapy at the GS-8 level or equivalent. This experience must have included demonstrated accomplishments in upgrading services to patients. The candidate must have demonstrated expert knowledge of respiratory therapy methods, equipment, and procedures and the ability to assume responsibility to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate programs involving respiratory care.
