A. Principal Duties and
Responsibilities:
1. Receives, reviews, interprets prescriptions, determines appropriate drug, strength and dose to be dispensed. Makes sure amounts of medications prescribed are within the limits set by policy of the hospital. Sets up the prescription by choosing appropriate stock container, pours and counts correct amount, attaches required labels (including auxiliary labels) and places in proper container. Transfers lot number from container to prescription form, initials work and sets aside for final check and dispensing by the pharmacist. 2. Compounds the full range of internal, external and IV admixture preparation. This requires a working knowledge of aseptic techniques, medication properties, chemical/physical properties, possible incompatibilities of ingredients used in compounding and necessary arithmetic computations. The ingredients used in compounding and necessary arithmetic computations. The ability to weigh ingredients accurately is essential due to the critical quantities used in most pharmacy preparations. All finished products are checked and initialed by the pharmacist to insure quality control. 3. Monthly checks pharmacy, wards, clinics and crash carts for outdated medications, proper storage of medications and quantity on hand. This performance is documented and filled. 4. Assesses and determines needs and levels of pre-packed medications. 5. Records (short book) all stock supply needs for appropriate action to maintain adequate stock levels and timely dispensing of medications and supplies. 6. Packages prescription drugs for mailing apply postal/VA regulations and cautions if necessary. In addition, maintains the required daily log of medications mailed to patients. 7. Receives and reviews physician medication orders on Form 10-2577d, Action Rx profile or Authorized Absence Discharge Summary. This information is entered into DHCP by technician. Labels for prescriptions and for mailing are generated. 8. Responds to inquiries from the staff, patients and outside parties and will provide accurate information that relates to a general knowledge of medications, pharmacy policies, procedures, terms, nomenclature, nearing systems and availability. Inquiries of a professional nature will be referred to a pharmacist for needed information. 9. Assists in distribution of correct medication to correct patient at the outpatient window. Proper identification is obtained before release by the pharmacy to the patient. B. Customer Service:
1. Customers are treated in a professional manner, with tact, courtesy and respect. Instills confidence and trust with supervisors, peers and subordinates by providing timely and quality service. Meets established time frames and deadlines in area of responsibility. 2. Provides professional and technical advice, support and assistance to all customers with a view towards accomplishing the service mission (i.e. customer service). Personal interactions will be free of legitimate negative feedback. 3. Interacts with a wide variety of staff and demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of their needs by taking ownership of the problem and adopting the customer's needs as their own. 4. Relationships with supervisors, co-workers and others within the organization must be consistently courteous and cooperative in nature and overall contribute to the effective operation of the service. Performance must demonstrate the ability to adjust to change or work pressure in a pleasant manner; handle differences of opinion in a businesslike fashion; follow instructions conscientiously; and function as a team member, helping the group effort where possible. C. Safety:
1. Comply with safety and environmental rules and regulations for safe job performance. 2. Use and maintain personal protective equipment when required and provided. 3. Promptly reports all accidents / illnesses to supervisor. 4. Notify supervisor of all unsafe or unhealthful conditions in the workplace and works to eliminate such conditions. Work Schedule:

Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency:
Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Grade Determinations:
GS-6 (a) Experience. One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk ( ):
(b) Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. (c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. (d) Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.(6) References:

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
